Benito Mussolini, the fascist leader of Italy, played a significant role in World War II as an ally of Nazi Germany. As the head of the National Fascist Party, he sought to expand Italy's territories and influence. Mussolini's regime joined the Axis powers, fighting alongside Germany and Japan. His ambition led to military campaigns in North Africa and the Balkans. However, Italy's military performance was poor, and Mussolini's popularity declined. In 1943, he was overthrown and arrested, only to be rescued by German forces. His leadership ended in 1945 when he was captured and executed by Italian partisans.
