Here are seen children of an eastern suburb of London. They have been made homeless by the random bombs of the Nazi night raiders, and are seen here waiting outside the wreckage of what was previously their home. This photograph was taken in September, 1940. Click here to enlarge. |
The Nazi night raiders' bombing of London, known as the Blitz, took place from September 1940 to May 1941 during World War II. German Luftwaffe aircraft conducted relentless nighttime bombing raids, targeting the city to demoralize the British population and force a surrender. Londoners endured extensive destruction of homes, landmarks, and infrastructure, resulting in around 30,000 civilian deaths. Despite the devastation, the British spirit remained unbroken, with residents taking shelter in underground stations and carrying on with daily life. The Blitz ultimately strengthened British resolve and highlighted the importance of civilian resilience in wartime. |
