A Frenchman Weeps as Paris Falls

An upset Frenchman weeps as German soldiers march into the French capital of Paris, on June 14, 1940, after the Allied armies had been driven back across the country of France. Adolf Hitler and Germany would rule France for the next several years, until 1944, through the puppet Vichy French government. Paris, France, was eventually liberated by Allied forces on August 25, 1944. Click here to enlarge.

On June 14, 1940, German soldiers triumphantly marched into Paris, marking a pivotal moment in World War II. The French capital, a symbol of resistance, fell without significant resistance following the swift and devastating German Blitzkrieg. Parisians witnessed the somber spectacle of German troops parading down the Champs-Élysées, with Nazi flags soon draped over iconic landmarks. The occupation of Paris signaled the collapse of French defenses and led to the establishment of the Vichy government. This event demonstrated the formidable might of the German military and marked a dark period in French history under Nazi occupation.
