Above is a map of the Balkan states of southern Europe at the end of
1913. It was ethnic unrest in the Balkans, culminating in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which sparked the First World War. Turkey, Greece, Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Roumania (Romania) can be seen south of the massive Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included Bosnia-Herzegovina. |
