The Caaba, surrounded by colonnades of the mosque.  The pilgrimage to Mecca is the most sacred observance of Islam (formerly called Mohammedanism).  Pilgrims from all Islamic (Mohammedan or Muslim) countries gather at the sacred mosque.  The city of Mecca is about 45 miles, two camel marches, inland from the Red Sea.  A railroad from the north will soon reach Mecca; it already extends as far as Medina (as of 1922).
