Although many people make the mistake of saying or writing "Soviet Union" when they mean Russia, or vice versa, the reality is that Russia was only one of fifteen republics that made up the Soviet Union. These fifteen republics are, since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, independent countries. The fifteen former republics of the Soviet Union are: (1) Russia; (2) Ukraine; (3) Uzbekistan; (4) Kazakhstan; (5) Belarus; (6) Azerbaijan; (7) Georgia; (8) Tajikistan; (9) Moldova; (10) Kyrgyzstan; (11) Lithuania; (12) Turkmenistan; (13) Armenia; (14) Latvia; and (15) Estonia.
