Yes, we know that countries like Afghanistan are not actually located in the Middle East, at least not in terms of basic geography. But we also know that teachers covering al Qaeda, bin Laden, etc., as part of modern Middle Eastern history, will cover the Taliban in Afghanistan; therefore, it's simpler (and more convenient) to include everything here.
