Who was Mary Boleyn? Mary Boleyn was the older sister of Anne Boleyn, who was the second wife of England's Henry VIII. Mary Boleyn is best known today from the modern film The Other Boleyn Sister, in which she was portrayed by actress Scarlett Johansson. She was rumored to be the mother of two of Henry VIII's illegitimate children. Mary Boleyn was married twice. Her first husband (1520-1528) was Sir William Carey, of Aldenham, a courtier. Her second husband (1534-1543) was Sir William Stafford, of Chebsey, a soldier. The royal family (Henry and Anne) were disappointed in Mary's marriage to Stafford because Stafford was a commoner. As a result of this marriage, Mary Boleyn was banished and spent the rest of her life living in obscurity. Mary Boleyn had two children (allegedly) with her first husband, Sir William Carey.
