This picture is of the Dance of Death, attributed to German artist Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519, Nürnberg/Nuremberg). It was first published in Folio CCLXI Recto of Hartman Schedel's Chronicle of the World. Reanimated and even lively skeletons were a frequent medieval artistic motif when dealing with the subject of the Black Death or Bubonic Plague, which struck Europe in 1347. Click here to enlarge. |
