President Abraham Lincoln, Pinkerton and McClernand at Antietam, 1862. The Battle of Antietam (Maryland) was the first battle of the U.S. Civil War fought on Union soil. This photograph, taken on October 3, 1862, shows Abraham Lincoln alongside Allan Pinkerton and Major General John Alexander McClernand. Allan Pinkerton served as head of Union Intelligence Services during the war, and later founded the famous (and infamous) Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Click here to enlarge. |
