The Pleistocene is a geological epoch. The Pleistocene lasted from about 2,588,000 years ago to about 11,700 years ago. The Pleistocene spanned the world's recent period of repeated glaciations, better known as ice ages. When the Pleistocene ended approximately 11,700 years ago, the Holocene epoch (the current geological epoch) began.

The pictures to the left illustrate some of the animals that lived on Earth during the Pleistocene. The animals are all drawn to scale. To the upper right of the images is a picture of a modern human, six feet tall, for comparison.

Identify and label each of the animals:
• Homo heidelbergensis (Heidelberg man)
• Musk ox
• Reindeer
• Saber-toothed cat
• Wild horse
• Woolly mammoth
• Woolly rhinoceros
