In French, these punctuation marks require a space both before and after: colons, currency symbols, exclamation marks, guillemets, hashes, percentage marks, question marks, and semicolons. |
Guillemets are often referred to as French quotation marks, even though they are used in a number of languages. |
Guillemets do not work quite the same as the quotation marks in English. For example, an entire dialogue will be contained within the guillemets, with hashes added to indicate that another person is speaking. |
« Où est le chat ? demande Clémentine. — Je ne sais pas, répond Cécile. — Je crois que le chat est perdu ! crie Clémentine. » |
