The United States completed its withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan on August 31, 2021. This marked the end of nearly 20 years of U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan, which began in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The withdrawal process was part of a broader effort to end the U.S. military presence in the country and transfer security responsibilities to the Afghan government. However, the withdrawal was followed by the rapid takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban, leading to significant political and humanitarian consequences.
