The four-square writing method is
useful in teaching writing skills, as well as in the
deconstruction of writing. Students begin by placing a topic sentence in the center square. Then, students compose an opening supportive sentence in the top left square, followed by two supportive sentences, and capped off by a summary sentence. Thus, students compose a paragraph, free of the distractions of superfluous information. It's that simple--each sentence either correlates to the topic sentence in the middle of the graphic organizer, or it doesn't. This worksheet is an excellent tool for keeping students focused.
