This free printable form offers a convenient way to track student absences throughout the school day. At the top of the sheet, write the date. Below the header are eight boxes. The periods are not numbered, in order to accommodate the "4-5" and "5-6" period numbering that many schools have to suit lunch times, etc. Teachers simply write the numbers of the class periods themselves. There are lines at the bottom for keeping notes.

Regular classroom teachers will enjoy this free reproducible, particularly on test days. A quick look over the next day serves as an easy reminder that "these kids still need to take the test." This sheet is also very handy for substitutes to log absentees for the regular teacher.

It is important for substitute teachers to track which students are absent to ensure the smooth functioning of the classroom and maintain accurate records. Knowing who is absent allows the substitute to understand the classroom dynamics better and adjust their teaching strategies accordingly. This information is essential for maintaining consistency in students' learning experiences, as it helps the substitute identify who might need to catch up on missed work or instructions.

Tracking absences also ensures student safety and accountability. If a student is marked present but is not actually in the classroom, it could raise serious concerns about their whereabouts. Accurate attendance records help in quickly identifying any discrepancies and addressing them promptly.

Furthermore, keeping track of absences allows the regular teacher to stay informed about which students missed class and may need additional support or information upon their return. This practice contributes to effective communication between the substitute and the regular teacher, ensuring that students' educational needs are continuously met despite any disruptions.
