Japanese-American Child Evacuee, World War II

"A young evacuee of Japanese ancestry waits with the family baggage before leaving by bus for an assembly center in the spring of 1942." Photo and caption by Clem Albers, California, April of 1942. As part of the American war strategy, and to assuage fears among the Caucasian population, persons of Japanese descent were ordered to relocation centers (by executive order) during World War II. It was not until decades later that the American government apologized for these actions, and provided reparations to the Japanese-Americans who lost their livelihoods and years of their lives because of the relocations.
